Kochi, August 18, 2026: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) is set to expand its shipbuilding footprint in Kochi after the Kerala government approved the lease of about 18.16 acres of land for a proposed project with an estimated investment of ₹5,000 crore.
The facility is planned as a ship block building unit and is expected to add significant capacity to CSL’s existing operations while strengthening Kochi’s position as a key maritime and shipbuilding centre.
The proposed investment is likely to create around 2,000 direct employment opportunities, with additional jobs expected across supporting industries and services.
The new facility could generate business for engineering companies, equipment manufacturers, logistics operators and other vendors connected to the shipbuilding supply chain, providing a broader economic boost to the region.
Under the arrangement, the land will be leased to CSL for an annual payment of around ₹1.45 crore, with the amount increasing to approximately ₹1.70 crore after applicable GST.
The state government cleared the proposal following discussions with the shipyard, paving the way for the development of infrastructure aimed at expanding ship construction capabilities in Kerala.
The project comes at a time when India is seeking to strengthen its domestic shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing ecosystem. For CSL, the proposed facility can provide additional space and capacity to handle future orders and improve operational flexibility.
For Kerala, the ₹5,000 crore investment is expected to support industrial growth in Kochi while creating opportunities for skilled employment and the development of a stronger maritime supply chain.
