Guwahati, Aug 19: Assam is gearing up for a major expansion of its rural road network under Asom Mala 4.0, a proposed Rs 10,000-crore programme aimed at improving last-mile connectivity, strengthening links between villages and markets and supporting economic growth across the state.
The programme envisages the development and upgradation of around 800 km of roads over the next five years, building on the infrastructure created under earlier phases of the Asom Mala initiative.
The focus is not only on improving travel for rural communities but also on creating stronger connections for agriculture, trade and local businesses. Better roads can help farmers and producers reach markets more efficiently, reduce transportation costs and improve access to healthcare, education and other essential services.
Asom Mala 4.0 is expected to draw funding from a mix of state resources, externally aided projects, infrastructure funds and public-private partnerships. The multi-source financing model is intended to support the scale of investment required for the planned road expansion.
The programme is also part of a wider connectivity strategy being pursued by Assam in coordination with the Centre. Major projects under development include the Guwahati Ring Road, Greenfield Silchar High-Speed Corridor, Kaziranga Elevated Corridor and Gohpur-Numaligarh Brahmaputra Tunnel.
These projects are expected to improve movement between major urban centres and economic hubs while providing faster and more efficient routes for commercial traffic. Stronger connectivity could also help Assam attract investment and expand its logistics and industrial potential.
The state is additionally looking at future access-controlled corridors connecting Barapani with Guwahati and Guwahati with Siliguri, along with bridge and railway projects aimed at improving connectivity to remote and strategically important areas.
The infrastructure expansion is likely to generate opportunities for construction, engineering, logistics and allied industries, while creating employment during project development and implementation.
For rural communities, the larger objective is to ensure that improved road connectivity translates into better access to markets, public services and economic opportunities.
With Asom Mala 4.0, Assam is seeking to build a more integrated transport network that connects rural areas with the state’s major economic centres and strengthens the foundation for long-term growth.
