Sep 30: Veli is set to take on a larger role in Thiruvananthapuram’s tourism and transport ecosystem as Kerala steps up efforts to expand the use of inland waterways for passenger connectivity and tourism.
Situated at the meeting point of Veli Lake and the Arabian Sea, Veli is already a popular recreational destination known for its waterfront landscape, boating facilities and proximity to the state capital. With new waterway connectivity, the destination is now being positioned to serve as an access point to the wider backwater network of Thiruvananthapuram.
A key development is the launch of the Veli-Kadinamkulam solar boat service on September 30. The passenger-cum-tourism service will connect Veli with Kadinamkulam through the Parvathy Puthanar canal and Kadinamkulam backwaters, offering both commuters and tourists a new way to experience the region.
The first phase will feature a solar-powered boat with a capacity of 24 passengers. Operating as a round trip from the Veli Tourism Village jetty, the service combines passenger mobility with a backwater tourism experience.
Waterways to Support Tourism and Connectivity
The initiative reflects Kerala’s broader efforts to strengthen inland waterways as an alternative mode of transport while unlocking the tourism potential of its extensive network of canals, lakes and backwaters.
The proposed Kadinamkulam–Anchuthengu Backwater Tourism Corridor, along with planned infrastructure and jetty development, is expected to support greater tourist access to destinations along the waterway.
For Veli, improved connectivity could strengthen its link with emerging tourism destinations and create a wider circuit around Thiruvananthapuram’s waterways.
Boosting Local Tourism and Economic Activity
The new service could also expand the economic opportunities associated with water-based tourism. Increased visitor movement along the route can support local restaurants, small businesses, boating activities, handicrafts and other tourism-related services.
By connecting an established tourist destination with the wider backwater network, Veli can offer visitors more than a short waterfront experience. It can become a starting point for exploring the natural and cultural attractions located along the waterways.
Solar-Powered Mobility Adds Sustainability
The use of a solar-powered boat adds a clean-energy component to the initiative, bringing together sustainable mobility and tourism.
The project also highlights the potential of waterways to complement existing road-based transportation. Kerala has been exploring greater coordination between water and road transport systems, including closer integration between the Water Transport Department and KSRTC.

The development brings together three important priorities—tourism, connectivity and sustainable mobility—and could strengthen Veli’s position within Thiruvananthapuram’s emerging tourism infrastructure.
As Kerala expands its water-based tourism network, Veli has the potential to develop into a key gateway connecting the capital city with nearby communities and backwater destinations.
