New Delhi, Aug 24: The Central Government has removed restrictions on the export of wheat flour and related products, including maida, semolina (suji), whole wheat atta and resultant atta, with immediate effect.
The policy change marks a significant shift from the export restrictions introduced in 2022, when the government moved to protect domestic food supplies and contain rising prices amid concerns over wheat availability.
The latest decision follows an improvement in domestic wheat production and stock levels. With supplies now considered more comfortable, the government has decided to allow exporters to access international markets without the earlier restrictions.
The move is expected to bring relief to flour mills, food-processing companies and exporters that have faced limitations on overseas shipments for several years. Greater access to international markets could also help mills improve capacity utilisation and create new opportunities for businesses involved in processed wheat products.
Indian exporters are likely to explore stronger demand in traditional markets, particularly across South Asia, the Middle East and parts of Africa. The move could further strengthen India’s presence in the global market for value-added agricultural products.
The government had previously introduced restrictions on wheat and wheat-based exports as part of measures to safeguard domestic availability and maintain price stability. These restrictions were gradually relaxed through limited export permissions and quotas.
With improved harvests, better stock availability and easing supply concerns, the latest decision signals a move towards a more open export policy for wheat-based products.
The government, however, is expected to continue monitoring domestic supplies and prices to ensure that increased exports do not affect food security or availability in the domestic market.
