Hyderabad, Apr 20: The liver, often described as the “powerhouse” of the human body, is fundamental to human survival. It is the largest internal organ and performs over 500 vital functions in the body. It also has the unique ability to regenerate itself. Despite this, many people tend to neglect liver health until a problem arises, allowing the organ to get silently damaged and eventually leading to life-threatening conditions.
To address this concern and raise awareness on the importance of liver health, the World Health Organization (WHO) observes April 19 every year as World Liver Day, promoting awareness through specific themes. For 2026, the theme “Solid Habits – Safe Liver” calls for the adoption of healthy lifestyle practices. In this context, doctors at Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar, created awareness about liver health and emphasised the importance of preventive care.
On this occasion, with the message “Love Your Liver… Live Healthy!”, a special Liver Check-up Package has been introduced to promote awareness among the public. The package includes essential tests such as Hepatitis B and C screening, HbA1c, Liver Function Test (LFT), thyroid profile, lipid profile, ultrasound abdomen (USG), along with consultations by a gastroenterologist and a dietitian. While the original cost of the package is ₹7,830, it is being offered at a special discounted price of ₹2,999. This offer is valid until April 30, 2026. Individuals aged between 18 and 30 years are encouraged to avail themselves of this opportunity. For further details, the public may contact 70362 70362, hospital authorities said.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. A.V. Krishna Chaitanya, Senior Consultant and Liver Transplant Specialist at Kamineni Hospitals, stated that awareness about liver health is extremely crucial. He explained that when liver diseases progress to advanced stages such as cirrhosis or liver failure, serious complications like fluid accumulation in the abdomen, internal bleeding, and liver cancer may arise. However, he noted that with modern medical advancements, effective treatments are available, including medications, endoscopic procedures, ICU care, and liver transplantation. Contrary to common fears, liver transplantation yields high success rates when performed at the right time. He advised patients with severe liver conditions to seek timely medical attention to not only save their lives but also improve their quality of life.
Dr. Tejaswini Tumma, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Therapeutic Endoscopist, stated that early symptoms of liver diseases such as fatigue, mild abdominal discomfort, and changes in blood test results are often ignored. She emphasised that identifying these signs at an early stage is crucial. Timely diagnostic tests such as blood investigations, ultrasound, and FibroScan can help detect liver problems early. With appropriate lifestyle modifications and medical treatment, these conditions can be controlled effectively and even reversed in early stages. She urged the public not to ignore even minor symptoms and to consult doctors promptly.
Dr. V. R. Sumanth Kumar, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Therapeutic Endoscopist, and Endosonologist, highlighted that liver-related diseases are increasing rapidly due to changing lifestyles. He pointed out that Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) is affecting nearly one-third of the global population. As the disease often remains asymptomatic, it can be particularly dangerous, eventually leading to liver failure or liver cancer. In India, the situation is more concerning, with about 38.9% of adults affected by MASLD. He added that nearly 2 to 2.6 lakh deaths occur annually due to liver failure. However, he stressed that the condition is largely preventable through proper lifestyle changes
